Healthy Tuck Enterprise

Author Learning and Teaching Scotland (LTS)
Description

The Healthy Tuck Enterprise course is designed to teach a class how to run their own healthy tuck shop as a successful, sustainable business. Healthy Tuck Enterprise covers aspects of health promotion and enterprise, giving the children a good opportunity to work together towards a common, tangible goal.

Learning objectives

Pupils at senior primary level will learn important thinking and social skills in a fun environment and learn about business in a situation they can relate to. The course enhances financial understanding by discussing cost, selling and profit figures and producing income and expenditure accounts.

The course develops business skills such as planning, organising, decision making and cause/effect. Pupils will identify business roles and what work is involved, learn about interviews, SWOT analysis, questionnaire design and advertising techniques.

They will learn about food safety and hygiene including hand washing, food labelling and 'The Balance of Good Health' guidance.

Benefits

  • Pupils work towards a mutually beneficial goal in a real-life business model.

  • The Healthy Tuck Shop is fully supported but set up and run by the children. They are therefore aware of risk and responsibility.

  • Pupils also develop healthy snacking habits!

The cost of the course is £395, which includes four visits, handouts and hire of a hand-washing machine.
