'Human Rights Topics for Preschool and Lower Primary School' is the second chapter in the downloadable United Nations publication 'ABC: Human Rights - Practical activities for primary and secondary schools'.
'ABC: Human Rights - Practical activities for primary and secondary schools' contains learning activities and games that can be used by teachers and other educators to foster human rights awareness among children and young people. Each activity is followed by a reference to articles of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the Convention on the Rights of the Child.
Chapter Two ('Human Rights Topics for Preschool and Lower Primary School') offers suggestions for nurturing younger children’s sense of their own worth and that of others through materials that evoke the human rights principles of human dignity and equality.
Activities for pre-school and lower primary are divided into the following areas:
- Appreciating similarities and differences
- Fostering confidence and self-esteem
- Building trust
- Creating classroom rules
- Understanding human rights
- Introducing children's rights
Chapters One (Using ABC: Teaching Human Rights) and Three (Human Rights Topics for Upper Primary and Lower and Senior Secondary School) can be downloaded from the Training and educational material page of the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights website.
