DescriptionLogo of NESTA A report which summaries the findings of four pieces of research commissioned by NESTA to explore how employers in three sectors, the creative industries, the third sector and the rural economy, engage with young people aged between 14 and 19, as well as how young people perceive work related learning.

The research studies used a range of methods to explore current practices and perceptions of work related learning. The studies of the creative industries, the third sector and the rural economy used largely qualitative methods, such as employer interviews. The research with young people involved video interviews across the UK.

The research found that schools and colleges are using innovative approaches to work related learning, including designing products and services and involving employers in the delivery of the curriculum. There were also effective applications of ICT, including the use of e-mentoring, which worked particularly well in rural areas.

The research also suggests that schools and colleges need to communicate the benefits of work related learning more clearly to employers, with a focus on the business related benefits young people can bring to companies and organisations.
