Building the Curriculum 2 was published in 2007 and focused on active learning in the early years.

The 3-18 curriculum connects the pre-school sector and the early years of primary in one level and describes experiences and outcomes for children’s learning which support a more active approach to learning and teaching in early primary school and encourage better continuity and progression for all children across all settings.

Building the Curriculum 2 provides an overview of active learning in practice, including:

  • what we know about young children’s learning and how this relates to the four capacities
  • how methodologies can change to support children’s learning as they develop
  • the importance of continuity in children’s learning and experiences as they move into primary school
  • practical aspects of active learning – staffing, space and resources
  • development of staff.

The information from the document is available in the Building the Curriculum 2 section of the Curriculum for Excellence website.
