Positive Behaviour

Video examples of restorative practices

An image showing a teacher talking to pupils outside classroom

The Teachers' TV website provides two different examples of restorative practices in secondary schools. Each clip lasts around 15 minutes and is accompanied by a collection of resources, including printable subtitles.

Video 1 - Secondary Management - Restorative Justice in Action 1

The first example looks at staff intervention after a pupil has been sent out of class for aggressive behaviour. Set in Drayton School near Banbury, staff and pupils introduce one of the latest behaviour management tools available to teachers.

This video looks at:

  • the impact restorative justice can have in the classroom environment
  • avoiding  instant punishment whilst encouraging children to think through the consequences of their behaviour
  • the use of restorative justice in a series of incidents involving bad behaviour

Video 2 - Secondary Management - Restorative Justice in Action 2

The second video shows a member of staff working to mediate in an ongoing agressor/victim situation. The video was captured at Whitton School in Twickenham, where they have recently introduced restorative justice as part of their behaviour management system.

The video looks at:

  • how restorative justice workers can have a positive impact on learning
  • how restorative justice is helping to resolve disputes between students
  • how to get pupils talking so they can resolve their own arguments
