Pupil peer mediation

Aims

The emotional development and well being of pupils is central to the ethos of St. Fergus’ Primary School. They adopted the Peer Mediation project in order to to encourage their pupils to take responsibility for their own actions.

What was done?

The project involved pupils:

  • volunteering to be elected – following election procedures
  • training in mediation
  • listening to other children when they are having a disagreement
  • ensuring they follow the rules of medication
  • attending weekly meetings.

Evidence of success

The peer mediation approach successfully reduced the number of referrals to the Head Teacher. In the subsequent surveys on pupils and parents the results have shown that if bullying does occur the victim knows what to do and that support is available.

Teacher's view

'We have helped the children to try to sort out problems on their own before they go to adults and it makes them see how they can come up with good ideas to solve problems.'
