
The Education Department provides an education service through seven secondary schools, 24 primary schools, of which nine have nursery classes, four nursery schools, two family centres and one school for children with special needs.
Schools within East Renfrewshire are making substantial progress in working towards the achievement of Health Promoting/Active School accreditation. They are committed to raising standards and improving the quality of provision of PE.
The authority has established a physical education working group within the Education Department. Part of their remit was to consider the implications of the National PE Review Group Report (2004).
In June 2005 the Scottish Executive invited bids for PE pilot projects to create development strategies for the delivery of two hours of quality PE to every child each week. With this in mind, the working group concluded that improvements in the following areas were required to improve the quality of provision in primary PE within East Renfrewshire:
