Dumfries and Galloway is a rural authority and the third largest region in Scotland. It covers 2380 square miles with a population of around 147,000. Only two towns have more than 10,000 inhabitants and most of the populations are found within 120 small towns and villages.
There are 41 nursery classes, 106 primary schools, 16 secondary schools and two special schools.
Improving the health and wellbeing of its young people is one of the key objectives of the Council’s Corporate Plan, its Education Improvement Plan and its mainstreaming approach to health promoting schools. To support these aims, Dumfries and Galloway produced a Physical Education Policy, and support documentation, which aims to increase physical education and activity opportunities for young people.
One of the aims included in the policy is that young people will have a pathway in sport from school to extra-curricular to community club provision.
In order to facilitate this aim, Physical Education Partnerships were formed in four geographical areas. This case study provides an overview of this partnership model.
