Physical Education

Introduction

Clackmannanshire Council

Clackmannanshire Council provides an education service through three secondary schools, 19 primary schools, four nursery schools and two special schools.

The authority has already embraced the importance of physical activity, sport and PE. The Council has a project in place in the primaries which delivers a minimum of 1.5 hours per pupil per week, which is 75 per cent towards the targets set in the National PE Review Group Report (2004).

The Clackmannanshire Primary Schools Sports Association has an annual programme with a range of opportunities which focus on more participation in sport. The Sports Development, Active Schools and primary PE staff operate an integrated approach which conveys a consistent message to all primary school pupils. There has also been work focusing on increasing the level of girls’ participation.

The gaps in the Clackmannanshire provision of PE were identified as:

  • secondary schools adopting two hours of PE
  • the additional core 30 minutes for primary schools
  • linking the primary PE project to the secondary syllabus.

It is from this background that the pilot project was conceived, developed and implemented.
