This report is the fifth in a series concerned with raising attainment in the 5-14 age range. Earlier reports in this series have consistently stressed the importance of effective teaching, high expectations and an emphasis on achievement. This report continues the same themes. It also stresses the importance of schools working with parents, communities and other agencies to promote physical education in day-to-day living.

A national conference was held in Edinburgh in September 2002 to disseminate and discuss the findings of the HMIE Report 'Improving Physical Education in Primary Schools'. This conference report is a compilation of the outcomes of the conference.

'Improving Scottish Education' is the first ever HMIE report to look at all stages of Scottish education. It draws on findings across all sectors of the main inspection and review programmes, aspect inspection tasks and HMIE's wider knowledge of the education system as gathered through liaison activities, engagement with research and activities in other inspection contexts.

The aim of this report is to provide practical support for all those schools and early education centres which are now ready to make that step change: from good to great.

This revised edition of 'How good is our school? The Journey to Excellence' contains a set of quality indicators and self-evaluation guidance for all schools. (PDF document)
