What schools can do

Out-of-school clubs

Many schools, along with partner organisations such as community education, health education and youth workers, offer activities for children of all ages. Sometimes they take place in schools but they can also be held in libraries, museums, art galleries, football clubs, sports centres or outdoors. Clubs and activities are often free.

When?

Out of school clubs can take place:

  • before school – breakfast clubs
  • at lunchtime
  • after school
  • at the weekend
  • during the holidays.

What are they like?

Clubs or out of school activities aim to:

  • consider the interests of children and young people
  • allow them to have a say in what is happening
  • focus on fun learning experiences in a relaxed and enjoyable atmosphere.

What activities are offered?

Activities vary but can include:

  • study support or help with homework
  • sports and physical activity
  • music and singing
  • creative and performing arts
  • arts and crafts
  • book clubs
  • enterprise activities
  • computer groups
  • photography lessons

Ask your child's school what activities are available.

Who is involved?

Many different people can be involved in helping young people learn and develop:

  • Teachers.
  • Artists.
  • Dancers.
  • Actors.
  • Musicians.
  • Librarians.
