Introduction

Parents' evenings are important because they give you an opportunity to discuss what your child is doing at school and how they are getting on.

Going to parents' evenings can help you become more involved in your child's learning. This helps you support your child in practical ways and may help you when it comes to making important choices.

A parents' evening allows you to discuss any issue you like you with your child's teacher, or each subject teacher in secondary school. Parents' evenings are also a chance for you to:

  • share background information about your child with the teacher
  • raise points and put forward your views
  • include your child in discussions during and/or after the meeting
  • strengthen your partnership with your child's teacher and the school.

Sometimes parents can find it difficult to attend parents' evenings for a number of reasons. Many schools recognise this and are working with parents to improve the arrangements for parents' evenings so that everyone gets the best out of them.
