Additional Support for Learning Act

A child or young person may have additional support needs if they need extra support beyond what is provided to children or young people of the same age, to help a child or young person benefit from education including pre-school, school and in preparation for post-school. The reasons for the need could include:

  • temporary medical conditions
  • family circumstances
  • bullying
  • disability
  • language and communication disorders
  • terminal illness in family
  • sensory impairment.

Additional support needs can be both long and short-term, or can simply refer to the help a child needs in getting through a difficult period.
