Introduction

There are many reasons why children and young people may need support to help them learn. The Education (Additional Support for Learning) (Scotland) Act 2004 came into force in November 2005. Read a summary of the Act

The Act promotes:

  • the concept of additional support needs
  • new duties on education authorities and other agencies
  • rights for parents
  • resolving differences between families and authorities, mediation, dispute resolution and the Additional Support Needs Tribunals.

You can get the latest information and news on the Act's implementation or to access a range of information leaflets on the Act.

The Scottish Government is taking forward an Education (Additional Support for Learning) (Scotland) Bill to help strengthen the rights of parents with additional support needs, and recently conducted a consultation on proposed amendments to the original Act. For further Information about the bill, including access to the the consultation results, please refer to the Scottish Schools website.
