Things to consider

Starting a new school, or even going back to school at the start of the new school year, can be a major event for both you and your child.

Your child may be:

  • moving from nursery to primary school
  • moving from primary to secondary school
  • changing school because you have moved to a new area
  • returning to a school that has merged with another school
  • moving to another school by request.

Whatever the reason, most parents share the same concerns:

  • Will my child be happy?
  • Will they be looked after properly? Will they be safe?
  • What are the classrooms and the rest of the school like?
  • What will the teacher be like? Will I get on well with the teacher? Will my child get on well with the teacher?
  • Will they get on with other children and make friends?
  • Will they cope in the playground?

As young people get older and move to secondary school, they become more independent but similar concerns remain:

  • Will they cope in the bigger school?
  • Will they make 'the right kind' of friends?
  • Will they be bullied?
  • Will they cope with lots of new subjects?
  • Will they cope with having different teachers?
  • If they have to travel further to get to school, will they be safe?
