Success stories

Forthview Primary School, Edinburgh

  • When children start Primary 1 the school invites parents in to have a bacon roll breakfast as their children are enrolled. The school runs a Going to School Project for 2-3 weeks, listening to parents, giving information sessions and answering questions.

  • Home visits are made by the P1 teachers and the home-school link worker to see the child in his/her own home and to tell parents how the child has settled in. The educational home visitor employed by the school spends a lot of time meeting and greeting parents and putting them at their ease to build up relationships.

Tough School, Aberdeenshire

Activities with Alford Academy were arranged to help pupils with additional support needs make the transition from P7 to S1. These activities start in primary 7 and include three visits to the Academy. The programme covers:

  • becoming familiar with the library, with the help of staff
  • using a map to find their way around the 'new big school'
  • getting to know learning support staff
  • getting to know the room set aside as a 'refuge' for children needing time out
  • meeting S5 buddies who will help them in August
  • visiting the canteen with their buddies.

Academy staff visit the P7 class to get to know pupils. There are meetings with all the key people involved, including the parents, to help with the move to secondary school.
