Points to consider

Woman and girl reading

Some points to consider in relation to parents helping out in the school:

  • Is there a member of staff whose remit includes working with parents?
  • Do all staff in the school welcome help from parents?
  • Is there a clear invitation to parents to become involved as a helper or in any other ways?
  • Has the school asked parents to let them know about their skills, talents and availability?
  • Is there a range of ways in which parents could help the school – both formal and informal ways?
  • Have Disclosure Scotland requirements been explained – with support and reassurance when this is required?
  • Can the school involve parents in short-term, one-off events or consultations to include those who cannot make long-term commitments?
  • Can parents take on the role of encouraging other parents to become involved, especially parents who might not have good memories of school?
  • Can parents who might have limited English help in the school?
  • Are parents given positive feedback and thanks for their contributions?
