Out of School Hours Learning

Carleton

Teacher Moira Varney started Radio Waves after-school club to help her become more confident with using the Radio Waves materials in the classroom. By working with a smaller group of pupils, Moira was able to see how she could teach a whole class. As children in the club developed different skills, including script writing, sound effects and editing, they were able to teach children in the classroom what they had learnt.

This encouraged all the pupils to develop their team working and computer skills, as well as giving them an increased sense of confidence and motivation. The project also provided opportunities for assessment. By making a recording of talking, the potential audience became enormous as the whole class, parents and local and international schools were able to listen to it again at a later stage.

Within the curriculum, the Radio Waves project is flexible enough to branch out into other subject areas where it can easily be adapted for every class and any area of the curriculum.
