Involving young people - Emerging

When a group of young people from St Benedict’s High School in Renfrewshire were asked to make a CD-ROM directory of children’s services in Renfrewshire, they knew they were taking on a big challenge.

'We met Laura from Renfrewshire Children’s Services Forum, who asked us to look at the children’s services plan and resource directory. We were asked to compress the information onto a CD-ROM for 14-25-year-olds.'

Seven pupils volunteered their free time after school hours for four months to create ‘Sourced’, the first children’s services plan to be publised in an accessible format for young people.

The services are grouped under themes from Healthy and Active to Safe, Respected and Responsible.

'We researched using the internet, and planned where the different bits of information were going to go in the CD-ROM. We made it interactive so users can follow things to websites they might find useful.'

The group worked with a designer to make sure it would be easy to use. They organised a launch involving 200 other young people.

The project was a lot of fun! We worked very hard on this, but we believe it’s now up to young people to take it and make it work for them.

‘Sourced’ was distributed through local secondary schools.
