Out of School Hours Learning

Getting the best from pupils and staff - Established

Clyde Valley High School in North Lanarkshire has a framework to develop citizenship skills in individuals and improve ethos within the school community. It provides a broad and diverse range of learning opportunities to younger pupils, and relevant training for the senior pupils who lead the learning programmes.

Peer Education - Working With Others is offered as an accredited subject within the S6 curriculum. Pupils who opt for this subject must commit to becoming leaders on at least two of the 12 support programmes within the framework. The programmes they choose to lead vary depending on their skills, interests and other commitments.

At the beginning of the session, S6 pupils take part in a residential weekend where they are trained in co-operative learning, communication skills and leadership. After this, each week they plan, discuss and evaluate programmes, and are encouraged to reflect upon and review their own contribution and effectiveness.

Senior pupils can work with a wide range of young people from P7 to S3, ensuring that many benefit, and their work is seen as being 'inclusive' within the school community.
