Western Isles: Automated e-learning in maths

About the project

This project focused on pupils' ongoing formative assessment in maths. A number of Western Isles schools trialled Alta Maths for Schools (produced by Alta Systems Ltd), a web-based, formative assessment system designed for primary and secondary schools. The system allowed pupils to do practice and adaptive questions at their own level and on any specific criteria.

Using Alta Maths for Schools enabled schools to embed Assessment is for Learning (AifL) in learning and teaching, encouraged pupils to take responsibility for their own learning and built staff and pupil confidence in the use of technology for learning.

Strengths of the system

• It provides instant feedback.
• Pupil and teacher can access previous results to gain an overall view of progress.
• Data can be used for reporting to parents in a simple visual way.
• System identifies development needs for individuals as well as for groups.
