Problem solving in financial education

East Dunbartonshire Council

Lenzie cluster schools developed a structured programme and resource pack to help children (from nursery-S2) develop an investigative approach to solving real-life problems.

This project ran from February 2006 to June 2007 within Lenzie cluster schools. It included:

  • an audit of existing practice in problem solving in financial education
  • staff training
  • development of a programme for all stages from nursery to S2
  • development of a resource pack
  • co-operative sharing of classroom practice and classroom visits by fellow teachers
  • project evaluation (by pupil and teacher questionnaires, parent and community feedback).

Through this project, the Lenzie cluster schools aimed to:

  • raise expectations of teachers, develop continuity and progression in problem solving through financial education
  • provide appropriate support for all pupils in collaborative problem solving through the context of financial management
  • provide support for teachers in aspects of cross-curricular financial problem solving
  • develop consistent approaches, including the use of formative assessment strategies across the cluster.

This PowerPoint presentation details themes used at each stage from nursery to S2 and how the cluster schools evaluated the project.

This Powerpoint presentation aims to answer the questions ‘What is financial education?’ and ‘Why is this financial maths project so important today?’

This planning document shows timescales and milestones in the financial education project.
