Ambitious, Excellent Schools
Ambitious, Excellent Schools sets out the Scottish Executive's agenda for the most comprehensive programme of modernisation for a generation or more. It encompasses actions to heighten expectations, to give more freedom to teachers and schools, to offer greater choice and opportunity for pupils, better support for learning and to create tougher, intelligent accountabilities.
National Priorities in Education
Priority 1 is: 'To raise standards of educational attainment for all in schools, especially in the core skills of literacy and numeracy, and to achieve better results in national measures of achievement, including examination results.' The National Priorities in Education website offers support to schools and education authorities taking forward the implementation of the National Priorities in Education.
Birth to Three: supporting our youngest children
Guidance for all those involved in caring for babies and very young children. This may include early years workers, social care and health practitioners, and students preparing to work in early years settings.
5-14 guidelines: Mathematics
Mathematics 5-14 comprises four main components: Problem-solving and enquiry, Information handling, Number, money and measurement, and Shape, position and movement. These components are designed to equip children with the concepts, facts and techniques necessary for mathematical problem-solving. The guidelines and an introduction to Mathematics 5-14 are available on 5-14 Online.

The NQ Online Mathematics page provides support materials and external web links for teaching and learning. News, events and feature articles are included to assist professional development.
To cope with the demands of everyday life, including work and study, we need numeracy and problem solving skills. Learn to be comfortable with numbers, and with graphs, symbols, diagrams and calculators in the Numeracy section of NQ Core Skills. Develop skills in critical thinking, planning, organising, reviewing and evaluating through a series of projects in the Problem Solving section.
National Statements
The National Statements for Improving Attainment in Literacy and Numeracy provide an overview of national guidance, resources and initiatives available across pre-school, primary and secondary education in Scotland. They also set out the Executive's future action to improve attainment in literacy and numeracy.
