Here the images have been grouped into suggested topics or ideas, as used in the National Qualifications Course Arrangements documents for Art and Design. It should be noted that these topics are only suggestions. In fact, it has only been possible to give one suggestion here, but some works fall into more than one category.

A form of art which shows a likeness of a particular individual subject. In the past, the main focus of portraiture was the representation of people, but animals and even buildings may also be the subject.

The representation of a single person or group of people. This definition may include animals.

A grouping of inanimate objects: fruit, flowers, ordinary household items or personal effects.

A work that focuses on air, land, water, etc. as opposed to environment which is man-made (for example, landscape, seascape).

A representation of man-made surroundings.

A work that focuses on images such as dreams, hallucinations, daydreams or images taken from literature.
