The images assembled for this resource are all taken from works in the Royal Scottish Academy’s collections and show the work of over 140 artists. The selection reflects what is available and suitable for presentation in this package. All artists are either Scottish or have a strong Scottish connection. Each image is accompanied by brief information about the work, a biography of the artist and a critical commentary of the work.
Works by these artists, and many others, are also widely reproduced in the literature on Scottish art. Original works in addition to those in the Royal Scottish Academy’s collections may be seen in the public art collections across the country. To gather further information on any artist it is recommended that you visit your local library and public art gallery in the first instance.
The images are copyright cleared and may be printed, but prints will show a watermark.
The production of this resource has involved the long-term cooperation and commitment of many people. Please visit the Acknowledgements page for full details.
The Royal Scottish Academy of Art and Architecture was established in 1826. Its founding aims were to assist Scottish artists and to promote art in Scotland through organising annual exhibitions, by developing the training of young artists and by providing financial aid to artists and their families in times of need. Despite the many changes that have taken place in the last 180 years, these aims remain to the forefront of the Academy’s activities today. The RSA hosts a year-round programme of temporary exhibitions of the best of contemporary Scottish art in its base at The Mound in Edinburgh and these are supported by a tailored-to-suit educational programme for visiting schools.
The Royal Scottish Academy does not have a permanent exhibition space for its historic collections. Although a selection of works is displayed in the RSA building on The Mound, the rest is kept in storage at the Dean Gallery in Edinburgh, where it is made available for scholars and researchers. If you particularly wish to see one or more of the originals of the works featured on this resource, you are welcome to contact the Royal Scottish Academy to make an appointment (details below). Please note that the collection is open on weekdays only and, due to security and health and safety issues, no more that 12 visitors can come to the facility at any one time.
