Skene Manuscript

This port has most of the classic port features:

It also modulates briefly into F major towards the end (Bbs). Modulation, or apparent modulation (without using accidentals) is another feature of many ports, especially in the second part of the tune. It has irregular phrasing, as do many ports, and unequal length of parts, part B being twice as long as part A. The second part is frequently longer than the first in many ports.

It is not, however, pentatonic, like many ports and is clearly more suited to the lute than the wire-harp, having flat accidentals, which are not possible on this harp. Many ports appear to have been enthusiastically adopted by lute players and would inevitably end up changing in the process.
