There are three main types of Scottish march tunes; the 4/4 march in simple time, the 2/4 march, also in simple time, and the 6/8 march that is in compound time. Marches are obviously for marching along to. The best way to get to know both the 4/4 march and the 6/8 march is probably to go along and hear a pipe band. When the band are actually marching it is these types of tunes that you will hear. Probably the most famous 4/4 march of all is Scotland the Brave, known all over the world and instantly associated with Scotland, but there are many other 4/4 marches which are played on all instruments. |
