William McTaggart (1835-1910) was born in Kintyre, Argyllshire. He moved to Edinburgh in 1852 and enrolled at the Trustees' Academy where he was a pupil of Robert Scott Lauder. McTaggart's early work consisted of portraits and subjects based on the human figure and its surroundings, and showing close attention to detail. In his later career he turned his attention to painting landscapes and seascapes in a loose, impressionistic manner and a great deal of his work was done in the open air.
