This document is HMIE’s Draft Gaelic Language Plan, prepared within the framework of the Gaelic Language (Scotland) Act 2005. It sets out how it will use Gaelic in carrying out its business, how it will enable the use of Gaelic when it interacts with stakeholders and partners, and how it will promote the development of Gaelic. It recognises that the development of Gaelic Language Plans by public bodies such as HMIE is a key component of the 2005 Act. It recognises that its Gaelic Language Plan will help to formalise and communicate to staff, partners and stakeholders what its policy is in relation to Gaelic matters, and what Gaelic services they can expect to access through HMIE.

The Scottish Government announced on Monday 5 October that every pupil in Scotland will be taught the key personal finance skills they need to be successful in the future. Cabinet Secretary for Education Fiona Hyslop visited Gylemuir Primary School in Edinburgh to see a financial education lesson in practice. Research published by the Scottish Government into the range and effectiveness of financial education across the country, found that while many schools have 'excellent practices in place, provision for pupils is variable'.

This HMIE report shows where effective practice already exists across Scotland in making positive starts for children to help them have positive future outcomes. The examples highlighted show the benefits in learning, inclusion and improved access to services for children, families and communities that result from participation in early intervention and family learning programmes. The report also shows the need for better co-ordination of services and resources.
