Detective Chief Superintendent John Carnochan of the Violence Reduction Unit believes that exposure to reading and listening at an early age can be influential in preventing youngsters heading down the wrong path in later life. Children whose parents read to them learn communication and listening skills which enable them 'to understand, to judge and to make good decisions'.
Chief Superintendent Carnochan also said that youngsters who got into trouble often had problems with reading and writing: 'The way they solve differences is through violence, rather than through debate or discussion.'
