To mark the bicentenary of the Abolition of the Slave Trade Act, the National Library of Scotland has been working in partnership with Dr Fred Freeman and Scotdec to develop a project for schools focusing on the theme of diversity and multiculturalism in Scotland.
This project, funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund, has involved producing a music CD based on the Library’s collections of traditional music.
Workshops suitable for P6-S2 will be available free of charge in Dundee, North Ayrshire and Angus during October 2008.
Dr Freeman will introduce pupils to traditional songs from the Library’s collections relating to the themes of diversity and multiculturalism in Scotland. Topics will include anti-slavery, anti-sectarianism, refugees, and Traveller culture. The focus is on a multicultural society which, from its inception to the present day, has struggled to realise its great democratic ideal - 'We're a' Jock Tamson's bairns'.
The workshops are available from 6 to 10 October, and will be delivered on site in each school.
