High school develops skills curriculum

20 June 2008

Govan High School has compiled its own list of transferable skills to guide teachers in developing their curriculums, and students in understanding what skills they have and their real-world value.

The Times Educational Supplement Scotland (TESS) reports that the school has established its own skills curriulum following confusion by pupils about what they had learnt and by teachers about what they should be teaching.

Staff at Govan High School realised they needed to ensure pupils were developing transferable skills but also that pupils could recognise these skills and talk to employers about how they can use them in different settings.

However, no definitive list existed so the school researched and developed its own list with 71 separate skills.

The school is convinced that skills should permeate all subjects and every activity and now hopes that the skills list will help to define pupils' assessment of themselves as confident individuals, under Curriculum for Excellence.
