The Cabinet Secretary for Education and Lifelong Learning Fiona Hyslop will today launch a DVD for parents offering the latest information on Curriculum for Excellence
The DVD has been produced by Learning and Teaching Scotland to help inform mums, dads and carers about what Curriculum for Excellence means for them and their children.
It aims to bring parents up to date, stimulate discussion and encourage them to have their say on the changes taking place in Scottish education.
The Cabinet Secretary will visit Kinneil Primary School in Bo’ness to meet parents, teachers and pupils. LTS parental involvement co-ordinator Lorraine Sanda will also attend the event.
The DVD is being sent out to all parent councils with a letter outlining plans for the year ahead as well as a leaflet encouraging parents to have their say on the changes to National Qualifications.
It features an address from Fiona Hyslop, as well as examples demonstrating how Scotland is undergoing its biggest classroom change in decades.
Ms Hyslop said: 'Scottish education is changing now to ensure our young people have the knowledge and skills they need for learning, and for their future life and work. Curriculum for Excellence is intended to raise achievement and attainment and to provide more choices and more chances for all young people, including those with additional support needs - and those with special talents.
'Parents have a key role to play in the success of Curriculum for Excellence and what it can bring to their children. By working together with schools, nurseries and others involved in Curriculum for Excellence, parents can make a real difference. All parents want the best for their children. Curriculum for Excellence aims to achieve the best for all children and young people in Scotland.'
LTS parental involvement co-ordinator Lorraine Sanda said it is important parents are involved in their child's learning: 'There is lots of evidence that parents want to support their own children's learning. If they have the right type of information and understand what is going on at school, they are obviously in a better position to provide this support. Curriculum for Excellence provides great scope for parents and schools to be working more closely together in the interests of children and young people.'
