Anna Zeng - transcript

(Anna speaks Chinese to introduce herself)

My name is Anna Zeng and I live in Edinburgh. And I teach Chinese in George Heriot's. And I am originally from China mainland - the province is called Zhejiang Province. The city is called Hangzhou.

I graduated from university in China first, and because there is a kind of project going on between my former university and a Scottish university, Dundee University, that's the reason we came over.

Yeah, the age will be 17, 18, who are going to university this autumn, so they are quite big ones.

The reaction varies, and some students, they are good at picking up the sound. Some are not that good, but they're still trying hard... It's ok, their writing. I think they found it a little bit difficult at the very beginning, which is understandable. And the material I give to them can help them to some extent, because it tells you how to... the order of the strokes. So I think to them it's like drawing in the very beginning, but after they have experienced writing them, they will find that actually there are rules that can apply, which is quite exciting for them.

There are always a lot of Chinese communities, and more and more Chinese people are abroad these days, because of Chinese open policy. But one thing I discovered about the Chinese people, including me, is it's not that easy for Chinese people to integrate, somehow. Maybe that's natural, like Indian people, they also tend to be together, or Scottish people tend to be together. That's always a problem, but, like you say, we always can have Chinese community, or some other country's community. This can help them to some extent. And... how to say... I think Scotland is becoming quite international, especially Edinburgh.
