Imperative (command) verbs

Imperative verbs exist basically in three forms:

  1. second person singular (tu)
  2. second person plural (voi)
  3. first person plural (noi - translates in English as 'Let's...')

Forming the imperative

To form the imperative, here's what you do:

  • For 'tu' and 'voi' forms, use their present verb forms (see present tense) - except for the 'tu' form of '-are' verbs, which add '-a' instead of '-i' to the root.
  • For the 'noi' form, use the corresponding present form.
  • Don't use the pronouns - 'tu', 'voi' and 'noi' - just the verb on its own.

Here is an illustration of how to form the imperative, using verbs with the three different endings:
