Director Ozon couldn't get the rights to remake Cukor's The Women, and so instead took a forgotten boulevard-theatre mystery as a vehicle for divas of French stage and celluloid of all ages. Eight women stuck in a snowbound country house had motives for killing the patriarch Marcel, whose corpse lies upstairs. But who dunnit? It’s quite short for a blockbuster, and almost slapstick in its melodrama.
