Task 6 - Linking the curriculum to the outside world

Task 6 - Linking the curriculum to the outside world

Task 6 is made up of three tasks and a task template.

Task 6A - Citizenship: valuing diversity

This task may tie in with the school's Citizenship agenda. Its format is similar to the starting points in Unit 5.

Task 6B - Community linking

This task contains ideas for exploring local links that may be relevant to language learning, as well as referring to foreign links that may already be an established part of the syllabus.

Task 6C - Curriculum linking

This task is similar to Task 6B but the Task sheet offers an alternative planning format. The additional PDF file explains how to fill it in. As with other starting point task sheets, you should use the task sheet to generate ideas, but select only two or three of them to implement. As before, the advice is to start small and develop slowly.

One school which took part in an earlier project used this format with learners when they were introducing a new topic. Teachers invited learners themselves to suggest possible links. Even though only a few ideas were followed up, learners were exposed to the idea that there are many ways in which modern languages, as a subject, is relevant to other parts of their lives. The 6C Task sheet can be used to introduce the idea to pupils.
