Implementing the plan

After all this preparation it is time to start implementing the first of your new approaches. Introduce only one new measure at a time, make sure the class is well prepared, and be ready for early setbacks. Not everything will work as you expect, but there will be a reason for that.

Watch the pupils’ reactions (or ask them) and see what tweaks may be needed to make things work better. Give each new measure time to bed down before starting the next.

Summary of the problem-solving process

  1. What do I want to achieve (short-term) in respect of this pupil/group of pupils?
  2. What are the learning characteristics of this pupil/group that are preventing these aims being achieved?
  3. What effects do these characteristics have on modern language learning?
  4. What strategies can I employ to negate or mitigate the effects of these difficulties?
  5. What help do I need in order to implement those strategies?
  6. Implementation, over a set period of time.
  7. Later: What worked well? What didn’t work? What else could I try? etc.
