Getting started

Before looking at the rest of Unit 1, you and your team should:

  1. Identify a target group of pupils whose progress is giving cause for concern.
  2. If possible, identify a member of the Support for Learning (SfL) department to work with you. (Read about the role of support staff in Guidance for school managers)
  3. Set a timescale for completing Units 1 and 2. The whole process can take a term or more, but the timescale is up to you.
  4. Download the PowerPoint presentation, below, so that it's ready for viewing. 
  5. Download and make copies of the PDF file 'Why aren't they learning? - Points for reflection' (below)
  6. Arrange a time when all your project participants can view and discuss the slide show together.
  7. View the slide show, pausing for discussion as indicated in the presentation.
  8. If time permits, hand out copies of the Points for reflection, give time for reading, then discuss. If time is short, hand out the copies and set another time for discussion.
