Teaching phonics at Minishant Primary

Children's reading skills are based on good phonic knowledge. At Minishant, they use many different classroom games and activities which are phonic based. Many of these involve the whole class working together.

One of these activities is the talking and listening morning, where the children were invited to bring in something and to talk about it. They took turns at speaking about their object, and the others then asked questions. Afterwards, each pupil wrote about somebody else’s object. So it was important to listen carefully to each speaker.

This activity always took place as a multi-composite group, involving P1-P3 pupils. This benefited the younger pupils, whose learning progressed quicker because of their interaction with their older peer group.
