West Dunbartonshire project: Raising Standards in Writing

Project objectives


  • To pilot a model for school-level moderation of the teaching and assessment of writing within and across schools in West Dunbartonshire Council.
  • To enhance staff knowledge and expertise in approaches to teaching and the formative assessment of writing.
  • To raise standards in writing.

Key findings


  • An increase in staff confidence in the use of new methodology in teaching writing.
  • Significant increase in staff confidence in use of new formative assessment tool.
  • Improved staff attitudes to collegiality.
  • Model of in-school and cross-school moderation to be shared with other schools in West Dunbartonshire Council.
  • Significant improvement in pupil confidence and performance in writing at some stages within both schools.

Future developments


  • Comprehensive CPD Programme to support all primary schools and secondary English departments in implementing methodology and new approach to formative assessment of writing (2006-2007).
  • Good practice to continue and be further developed.
  • Further pilot in session 2006-2007 to devise authority-led moderation of writing across all schools in West Dunbartonshire Council.
