East Dunbartonshire project: Talking and Listening through Media

Project objectives


  • To use film and media text to promote pupil engagement in learning.
  • To use film and media text to promote collaborative working.
  • To use collaborative strategies to improve talking and listening skills.
  • To engage pupils with the use of technology.
  • To develop staff skills and knowledge through collegiate working.

Key findings


  • Pupils were aware of some media concepts but became more adept at using key media terminology.
  • Pupils’ responses were sophisticated and of a very high quality, often exceeding their previous attainment levels.
  • Pupils were highly motivated and engaged.
  • The challenge of working collaboratively was embraced by pupils.
  • Analytical skills were developed and technological skills increased.
  • Listening skills developed with pupils becoming more active in the listening.
  • Teachers’ technology skills improved.
  • Clear links made to other areas of the curriculum.
  • A great sense of enjoyment and enthusiasm was expressed by teachers and pupils alike.
  • Clear links were made to Curriculum for Excellence.
  • The creation of a learning community that will be able to use their newly established working relationship in other areas of the curriculum.

Future developments


  • Ongoing staff training, particularly for new staff who have not used this approach.
  • Good practice to continue and be further developed.
  • A need for additional topics to be created to meet the needs of composite classes.
  • Review of attainment in talking/listening.
  • Sustain and develop the collegiate approach in moving forward Curriculum for Excellence.
  • Maintain and further develop, as appropriate, teachers’ skills in the use of technology.
  • For pupils to continue to build on the skills developed through the project.
  • For pupils to provide opportunities to demonstrate their confident use of media technologies across the curriculum areas and in other contexts.
