Tiree High School has focused on developing its delivery of 'writer’s craft' skills with P6 to S2 pupils.

The main emphasis of this project is on developing shared strategies and interactive resources to promote the pupils’ awareness, analysis and use of writers’ techniques in their own writing.

They plan to build familiarity and confidence in using formative assessment strategies to engage and motivate their pupils to develop their writing skills.

The following progress has been made (to date):

  • All pupils given ‘baseline’ writer’s craft exercise.
  • All pupils given questionnaire on their attitudes to writing.
  • Resources placed on intranet for use by class teachers.
  • Training and motivation for staff by Literacy Quality Improvement Officer.
  • Observation of writer’s craft lessons across phases.
  • Feedback observation form to colleagues about use of formative assessment techniques, etc.
  • Discussion of strategies and resources for delivery and response to pupils’ writing.
  • Planned parents’ evening workshop to celebrate pupils’ achievements and help parents support pupils.
  • Awareness, via school newsletter, including examples of pupil work for whole school community.
