What is Question Quest?

Question Quest is a parental involvement project aimed at children in Primary 5, working at Level C, devised by staff in the Early Intervention Team in East Ayrshire. It continues the development of home-link projects that have been created by the team to include parents in their children's learning as much as possible.

It is a widely recognised fact that parents have a very powerful impact on their children's learning. Reading is a prime example of this.

Through East Ayrshire's focus on Story Sacks in the nursery, and subsequently on Curiosity Kits in Primary 3, there has been a continuum of support for parental involvement, particularly in literacy.

It is planned to provide a Question Quest set of kits for use in every Primary 5 classroom in the authority. This will cover the 46 primary schools, and will have an impact on learning for approximately 1300 children.

Project aims

The aim of the project will be to support literacy, based on a lending-library approach. It is anticipated that parents will support the children's reading of the book in the kit, and the children will then be able to play the Monopoly-type of game, which is included. There are also three independent literacy activities for the children to do, where the focus is on topics in the book. It is also possible for the games to be played in small groups in the classroom.

The project will also support the teaching of non-fiction within the class. East Ayrshire Council has seconded an experienced class teacher for 23 months to support the implementation of the project.
