We look at the education programmes offered by the Mitchell Library and how library staff incorporated the 2008/09 Anne Frank exhibition into school visits.

A group of solicitors volunteered to work with pupils and were trained in paired reading techniques by Glasgow City Council.

Dumfries and Galloway trained S6 pupils in the Machars cluster to work with reluctant readers in the middle stages of primary school.

This programme set up after-school groups in primary schools to prepare pupils for transition to secondary by developing their reading. Group activities include arts and crafts, internet research on authors, discussions, reviews and quizzes.

This award allows teenagers to select the winning authors from a shortlist of quality teenage fiction.

Catalyst is an initiative to encourage S3 and S4 pupils in North Lanarkshire to read more and retain their links with the school library, through lunchtime book groups, newsletters and an annual book award.

This parental involvement project, devised by the Early Intervention Team in East Ayrshire, uses innovative reading kits to encourage literacy amongst P5 pupils. A series of lesson ideas are provided.
