Police reading lessons

A police officer in uniform

This series of lessons has been designed to help P3 or P4 pupils become thinking and questioning readers. The teaching package includes a non-fiction book which gives pupils interesting information about police dogs, police cars and police uniform.

Lesson plans and textbook

There are three detailed lesson plans for teachers; each plan outlines resources needed, learning intentions and the different strategies to use. All resources are provided including the main police reading lesson textbook. Supporting resources such as posters, photographs and vocabulary cards are visually stimulating and should encourage discussion.

Collaborative and active learning

Pupil learning styles have been taken into account. Collaborative and active learning are integral parts of the lessons. Games and colourful flashcards are provided to help motivate pupils and reinforce learning. Resources to help pupils grasp true/false/can’t-tell type questions are also available.

The use of reading partners is also promoted, and the lessons can be taught to the whole class with on-site differentiation and support being provided by the teacher.

The lessons aim to give pupils the opportunity to:

  • learn to make meaning from the text
  • take part in activities that require them to demonstrate comprehension
  • apply what they have learned in different situations.

The lessons are appropriate for pupils heading towards the end of P3 or who are familiar with reading strategies. They are also appropriate for P4/P5 pupils, where teachers can adapt lessons and pace to suit their own classes.
