Individual visits

Each year there will be considerable scope for individuals to design and undertake a study visit. Individuals may apply at any time in the year to make a study visit, on a theme relevant to their needs, and should read the guidance about eligibility.

Visit objectives

Applicants will need to justify the choice of destination, and identify the specific purpose of the visit and why the location is appropriate.

The objectives for the visit should normally be consistent with local and national development priorities, and wth SCIPD programme priorities. Individual study visit applications should identify ways in which the visit will benefit the school/authority, in addition to contributing to the individual’s professional development.

There will usually be two types of individual visit:

  • where individuals stay in hotel rooms and the costs of travel and accommodation are met

  • where individuals stay with a host member of staff in receiving countries, when only travel costs and a reduced level of subsistence are required.

Application procedures - individual visits

Applications for individual visits are welcome throughout the year. Individuals wishing to participate should apply in line with the following procedures:

  • Seek approval in the first instance from their headteacher. Applicants who are headteachers should approach the appropriate authority official.

  • If the visit is approved at that level, the completed application should then be submitted to the authority’s international education co-ordinator for approval.

  • Following approval, the application should then be sent to the International Education team at LTS.

  • If the funding is agreed, applicants will be responsible, with their international education co-ordinator, for preparing and confirming a programme with the receiving country, its school or institution, which should be submitted to the International Education team at LTS.

  • All travel and subsistence arrangements will be made by the applicant, supported by the authority co-ordinator.

  • Risk assessments will be the responsibility of the individual’s employer.

  • Following the visit, the applicant will be required to submit reports in line with reporting procedures. International education co-ordinators in authorities will be responsible for ensuring that these reports are submitted in line with agreed procedures.

Costs

On an individual study visit, LTS funding can be used towards the following costs:

  • international travel costs for travel on pre-determined dates from a Scottish international airport. Travel, however, cannot be within the start and finish dates of the actual programme itself, as participants are expected to participate fully in the programme
  • accommodation
  • transfers and travel within the destination country.

Costs which will not be met by LTS are as follows:

  • teaching supply cover
  • transport costs within Scotland (local authorities may decide to subsidise travel costs to the starting point for departure for the visit)
  • hotel costs other than those specified above, for example laundry, drinks, room service
  • any incidental purchases, for example pocket money
  • travel insurance
  • vaccination and medical costs
  • visa costs if required.
