Scottish Continuing International Professional Development Programme

Leading learning to make a difference in the classroom

The symposium was organised as part of the Scottish Continuing International Professional Development Programme facilitated by LTS.

It addressed the key issue for all educators as Scotland implements Curriculum for Excellence: how to ensure that the principles underpinning Curriculum for Excellence translate, in the classroom, into real improvements in achievement and attainment for Scottish children.

Dr Avis Glaze held the post of Education Commissioner for the Province of Ontario and Senior Policy Adviser to the Minister on Equity and Character Education. The focus of the keynote address was leadership of learning, with an emphasis on what makes a difference to the quality of teaching and learning in the classroom.

The emphasis across the Province of Ontario has been on improving student achievement and ‘closing the gap’, through leadership development, capacity building, professional accountability and learning from research findings.

In Ontario, improvement in education is being realised without rancour or ranking. They describe their system as one that has high expectations, high challenge and high support.
