Equality Policy at Hillhead High

Read how staff and parents at Hillhead High School have recently revised their Equality Policy in order to help embed a multicultural, multi-faith approach as part of the school curriculum.

 

ASL (Additional Support for Learning) Implementation Group (Health)

This is a new Lothian website with resources for schools, nurseries and childcare settings including: practical inclusive ideas for the classroom and school/nursery environment; health information; therapy resources; and local health professional contacts.

The resources on this website have been designed primarily to provide teaching and support staff with information, advice, strategies and activities that are both functional and relevant, and that can be used to support children with additional support needs in the classroom. It includes useful links to some Mental Health downloadable resources, a Speech and Language Therapy published resource list, an Ocupational Therapy published resource list and much more.

Access All Areas

This report is the result of a three-year study set up by Scottish Borders Council in collaboration with Children in Scotland.

Over 750 primary and secondary pupils throughout the Scottish Borders have given their views on what makes the school experience a positive one, including friendship, staff, resources, communication, physical environment and whole school ethos.

New Maximising Potential website

A new online resource for teachers to support inclusion in modern languages written by educational consultant Hilary McColl and Catriona Oates, Professional Services Officer at Scottish CILT, is now available. It supports individual modern language teachers and modern language departments in meeting the needs of an ever-widening range of learners.

 

Gender Equality: A Toolkit for Education Staff

Under the new Equality Act (2006) and the Gender Equality Duty, schools have to show that they are eliminating unlawful discrimination and harassment and promoting equality between women and men. This toolkit has been produced to help schools reflect on and develop that process throughout all aspects of their work.

The Fourth National Count Us In Conference, 14 November

This year’s Count Us In conference, organised jointly by HMIE and LTS, will be held at the BLCC, Lauder College, Dunfermline. The programme will include a variety of workshops, several of which will highlight effective practice in joint working across a range of partners including schools, colleges, health workers, social workers and voluntary organisations. The workshops will feature practitioners and direct input from children and young people who have benfited from different provisions.

Training Opportunity: The FRIENDS Programme: A proven, preventative approach to support

children’s anxiety and emotional wellbeing


FRIENDS was developed in Australia and has been evaluated extensively since 1998. It can be delivered to a wide school-age population as part of a preventative approach aimed at reducing anxiety problems and promoting children’s resilience.

The only programme of its kind endorsed by the World Health Organisation, FRIENDS has been shown to be the most effective and clinically proven method of preventing childhood anxiety.

The 10-session programme, based on the principles of Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT), can be delivered to a whole class, small group or individual, with additional sessions for parents. Currently the FRIENDS programme is tailored to two age groups: 7-11-year-olds and 12-16-year-olds.

One-day training courses, covering the principles of CBT and training to deliver the FRIENDS programme, are being offered in Stirling on the following dates:

Mon 29 October, Fri 16 November, Fri 7 December, Fri 11 January, Thurs 24 January, Fri 15 February, Fri 7 March, Mon 31 March, Mon 28 April, Fri 16 May, Fri 6 June.                                    

The course will be of interest to psychologists, teachers, school nurses, inclusion support staff, social workers and mental health workers. The day’s training will cost £120.
