Looked after children and young people

Improving outcomes and experiences for looked after children and young people is very much a part of developing greater inclusion and equality for all children and young people. Key/new items on the Looked after Children and Young People website:

A Scottish Government report provides examples of practice from all 32 Scottish local authorities which show their aspirations for their looked after children and young people and care leavers. Local authorities have powers under Section 30 of the Children (Scotland) Act 1995 to provide financial support for care leavers who are in full-time education, training or a modern apprenticeship. Looked after children, young people and care leavers: examples of good practice under Section 30 Children (Scotland) Act 1995 by all local authorities in Scotland


English as an Additional Language (EAL)

The new EAL section has many new resources and sharing practice examples, including:

This document should be used as a self-evaluation tool by teachers, schools and local authority managers in conjunction with How good is our school? Inclusion and Equality Part 4: Evaluating Educational Provision for Bilingual Learners and How good is our school? The Journey to Excellence (HGIOS 3).


Learning in 2(+) Languages: Ensuring Effective Inclusion for Bilingual Learners Training Materials
This training pack is in two parts. It consists of an animated PowerPoint presentation and a booklet which suggests related points for discussion, video clips, activities, further reading and websites.

Educational law unit legal advice for pupils

Govan Law Centre (GLC) is an independent, community-controlled organisation, which exists to tackle unmet legal needs within the Greater Govan area and other areas of social disadvantage as determined by the Govan Law Centre Trust. GLC has produced a great variety of leaflets, in various languages, outlining rights and responsibilities, for example 'Help I'm Being Bullied', 'Do I Have to go to School?'.

Dalry Primary School celebrates the benefits of embracing pupils from non-English-language-speaking countries.

Learning from USA - Page Scholarship visit
An English as an Additional Language teacher explores teaching methods in the USA that cater for pupils whose first language is not English.

Incredible Years Programmes
Glasgow's Hospital Education Service runs the Incredible Years Programmes, group-based interventions for both children and their carers which aim to increase social competence.

Sense over Sectarianism 2009
St Mirin's and Croftfoot Primary pupils in Glasgow took part in a Sense over Sectarianism project to change attitudes and promote friendships.

Supporting vulnerable children during lunchbreaks
Chirnside Primary introduced a range of activities and support for children who felt excluded from playground activities.

Pupil supporters scheme
Inverurie High School runs a Pupil Supporters Scheme to address bullying and other issues which concern pupils. Former pupil Emma Gibb talks about her experiences as a member of the scheme.

Groups of educational psychologists from different Scottish councils have been working together on project work around agreed themes.
